Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM)

Research groups of the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Maastricht. Main Departments involved in CARIM’s Research Program: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cardiology, Internal Medicine. Pathology, Physiology, Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Radiology, Neurology, Medical Microbiology and Virology, Neurology, Vascular and Cardio-thoracic surgery.

Mission
CARIM is an institute that wishes to provide an outstanding, internationally competitive environment for the study of causes and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It is a training center (Research School) for both basic and clinical scientists in the field of cardiovascular research.

Research fields
Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Cardiac Function and Adaptation, Vascular Biology.

Research focus
Major mechanisms of damage of the heart and blood vessels, and therapeutic interventions to prevent and repair this damage.

Research budget
In addition to basic funding from the Universiteit Maastricht and the academic Hospital Maastricht, CARIM receives on average € 6.5 million a year from third parties (25 % supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, 30% by non-profit foundations, e.g. Heart Fund and Kidney Fund, and 45% by industry and SenterNovem).
