Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS)

Participants
Research groups of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Utrecht University.

Mission
Performing conceptual research focused on the discovery, development and use of drugs. In addition, the UIPS will train research scientists in the field of the pharmaceutical sciences.

Research fields
Immunopharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Biomedical Analysis, Pharmaco-epidemiology and Pharmacotherapy.

Research focus
The scientific research of the UIPS centers around gene function and structure-function relationships of peptides and proteins that play a role in the recognition of molecules by the immune system and in signal transduction and integration in the nervous system. The guiding theme of this research is the discovery, development, and use of drugs.

Key words
Inflammation (asthma, COPD, allergy, bowels disorders), CNS (anxiety/depression, schizophrenia), peptidomimetics, combinatorial chemistry, activity-guided isolation of biogenic products, molecular modelling, biophysical characterization, liposomes, biodegradable polymers, non-viral transfection, homing devices, analytical/clinical toxicology of medicines, biomolecular mass spectrometry, pharmaceutical biotechnology, pharmaceutical technology assessment, pharmaco-economics, evidence based pharmacotherapy, post-marketing surveillance.

Research capacity

The total research capacity at UIPS in 2004 was 101 fte (full time equivalents). 123 Ph.D. students were employed within UIPS in 2004; 42.5 of whom are funded by the first flow, 28 from by the second and 52.5 by the third flow of funds. There were 41 post-doc researchers; 12.5 of them are funded by the first flow, 8 by the second and 20.5 by the third flow of funds.

Research budget
M€ 13.8 million (approx. 16% supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and 38% by third parties).
